Many people in sales or business development understand the importance of relationships. But, many do not understand the vital importance of serendipity. Let me explain.
When I started my business, some moons ago, I made it an absolute priority to say hello to anyone who came within ten feet of me (thank you to Jared Smith for this tip!). As a result, I ended up introducing myself by saying, “Hi, my name is Michael and this going to sound crazy, but you came within my 10 foot radius. That means I have to say hi to you and tell you I own a business called The Sales Effect; this is what we do…”
As you might guess, I got a lot of puzzled looks from people, but many of my encounters have resulted in fantastic business relationships and yes, business and referrals!
Last but not least, I made it a point to meet with people – not like one of those networking seagulls hoping for business, but because I genuinely wanted to know them and understand what their business was about. Result? Almost always, we would be sitting at a table and my guest would notice a friend or a friend would notice them. My guest then introduced me to them and voila, I made another new contact. This too has resulted in many great (and real) business relationships, more referrals and yes, even business.
Thus – the art and science of… Serendipity!
I wish you all the success in the world, now go out and BE the difference!
